Cat hair under microscope

Kitty cat has always seemed so aloof. As far as I’m concerned, I’m always on her level. When she was a kitten, my little feline could play with my fingers as if she were playfully tickling me, and, like a gentle giant, she’d rub my face and make me feel loved. Now, though, I feel like the one playing. She always knew what I wanted, and what I wanted was for her to go get me a cigarette. I would sit in front of the television and play with her, as she would lie in my lap, purring, enjoying my attention. She wasn’t a lap cat, though, she didn’t purr and lie on my lap. We were more like friends.

That is until she began scratching on my lap. My hand would itch as she licked it. I’d scratch her back, and she’d wag her tail and purr. There were so many times I wished I could just give her a cigarette to scratch on. Sometimes, when she scratched on my left knee, I’d say, “Kitty, no! You can’t touch my leg! You’re a bad kitty!” But she never heard me.

And then the scratching started. On my face. On my arms. On my chest. On my legs. On my feet. She would lick, scratch and purr, but she never stopped. Once, I got up and tried to take a picture of her in my office, but she clawed at my hand and dragged me down. Even then, she would not let up. She scratched and scratched. My hand hurt so much I thought it would fall off. I could not sleep. I did what I could to take the pain away. I called my friend who was staying in the next room over to come wake me up. “I need to take a nap.”

“It’s your time for a nap,” he said. He left. I kept calling to him. “Can’t sleep! I need to nap!” He said he was going back to sleep. I called for the Lord. “God, I need sleep! Give me sleep!” Nothing.

The next day I was a wreck. It was not from the pain of the scratching. I’d forgotten about it. I’d even had the nerve to laugh and say, “I don’t think she likes me. I think she likes me better than her momma!” My housemate and I had been having this conversation every day and I’d always say something like that. She’d say, “Oh, she likes you. She likes everyone. I don’t know why she would scratch your hand.”

I kept praying. Nothing. I’d call him and tell him I was praying. “Please, God, I’m praying. I need help.” Nothing. I kept waking up to take showers or to brush my teeth. I did everything I could to take care of myself. When I had nothing to do, I lay down in the spare bedroom. The Lord would not let me sleep, so I was awake. Finally, I said, “Please let me sleep, Lord! I’m praying!” He did. My housemate slept.

Two days later, I started having a headache. It felt like it was in the center of my head. I tried to ignore it. The headache kept getting worse. I’d sit down to eat. The pain was so bad that I couldn’t take a bite. So I laid on the floor. I told the Lord, “This can’t go on. It’s too much.” I lay there and said, “Jesus, I’m crying! I can’t take it. I can’t take it! I need to sleep. I’m asking You, Lord, to please take this away!” It didn’t go away.

That night, the pain woke me up and said, “I’m back!”

Then I fell back to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night. The headache was gone. I prayed and thanked the Lord. A couple of days later, the pain started back up. The Lord, again, took it away. Two days later, the headache came back. I prayed. The Lord, again, took it away. Then, in the middle of the night, the pain came back. I lay there, I prayed, “The Lord, take this away.” The next day, it was gone. “This can’t go on. It’s too much.” I lay down and said, “Lord, I need to sleep. I’m asking You to please take this away!” Again, it left me.

That night, the pain woke me up and said, “I’m back!” I prayed. The next morning, it was gone.

When we know that Jesus is the answer, the only thing to do is to come into the arms of Jesus. What does Jesus promise us about that?

“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” Matthew 28:20

What does that mean?

When Jesus spoke those words, He didn’t mean that He was going to appear to us in our dreams. He didn’t even mean that He was going to appear to us in our sleep. He just meant that He was going to come to us. We know that we cannot receive what He is going to give us. The only way He will give us is in a way that we cannot receive.

We know He is a jealous God. When Jesus promised that He would come to us in a way that we could not receive, He was telling us that He was a jealous God. That means He will not give us anything we can receive through our own strength. He will give us everything we need through His strength. He will give us His strength in our weakness. He will give us the power we cannot find in our own strength. He will give us our salvation in His Spirit. He will give us love in His Spirit. He will give us faith in His Spirit. He will give us the ability to do the impossible through His Spirit.

And, He will give us His Holy Spirit.

And, He will give us His power to live the abundant life He has promised to us through His power.

So, the next time you feel as if you cannot go on, don’t think for a moment that you cannot go on. Instead, ask Jesus to come to you through His strength. He will give you everything you need. He will help you in your weakness. He will help you to put yourself into a right relationship with the Father. He will give you life in every way. He will give you salvation, faith, and the power to do what He wants you to do.

The reason Jesus came into the world was to bring us His life through the Holy Spirit. It is not enough that we have His words or His deeds. We need to live His life in us and for us through His Holy Spirit. We need to put ourselves into a right relationship with the Father in every way.
