Pet dye is becoming more and more common and popular on the world market and, although this fashion has emerged not so long ago, the sight of “colorful” dogs and cats on the streets is nowadays relatively frequent. Celebrities of international fame, such as top Alessandra Ambrósio, have already entered the wave of dyeing of pet hair, attracting even more fans and followers of this new practice, which continues to cause controversy among animal lovers.

Although the market already offers different versions of dye for pets - who promise not to harm the animal's skin or cause any kind of reaction - many still criticize this type of procedure, and believe that it can be extremely harmful to dogs and cats that have their colored coats.

As a result, the City Council of Salvador (BA) has just approved a Bill that prohibits the use of paints on animal hair in the city and, from now on, those who break the rule will be punished. According to the creator of the project - councilor Marcell Moraes - the objective of the law is to prevent animals from being harmed by the use of this type of product, which, because it can cause serious problems in the skin and eyes of pets, configures the mistreatment of animals ; even though this is not the intention of the owners who dye the fur of their pets.

If, on the one hand, there are already laws to prohibit the practice, on the other, there is a growing legion of fans of multi-colored pets and in the United States it is even possible to attend competitions that reward the best decorated dog for use of dyes. As mentioned above, dyeing the hair of dogs and cats still causes a lot of controversy in the world of pet lovers and, thinking about it, the specialized industry develops more and more specific products for the coloring of animals' fur; guaranteeing freedom from problems due to toxic substances present in their formulas.

In Brazil, several pet shops already have this type of service in their portfolios, and take advantage of toning shampoos to give pets a new look. Without toxins, the products used in this type of coloring remain in the animal's fur for up to four baths. However, it is important that all pets that go through the process perform a sensitivity test before applying the product, ensuring the absence of negative reactions or more serious complications.

In most cases, products that promise not to harm the skin of dogs and cats that are composed of substances such as aniline, which is natural and also used in cake decoration, for example. Among the products to dye the coat of animals there are also options that can be applied by the owner of the pet and, as in other cases, the color comes out of the hair in a few baths.

Care when dyeing pets

In order for your pet to be able to maintain health and show off a new look on the streets, it is essential that a sensitivity test be done before applying the coloring product in animal - whether the process is done at home or at a pet shop.

To perform the test, the animal must receive - in a small region of its skin - a sample of the product that will be used for dyeing, allowing it to remain in place for about 24 hours without washing. If no reaction is triggered after this period, the animal is free to go through the procedure.

Another important factor is that only products specifically developed for this function should be used in the dyeing of dog and cat hair. Bearing in mind that the vast majority of dyes for humans have toxic substances (such as ammonia) in their composition, it is essential to know that this type of composition should NEVER be used on animals.

Toxic, the ingredients present in the most common dye formulas can poison and cause serious skin and vision problems for pets, which can lead to death if they are not promptly treated after contact with such substances.
