Can dogs have sesame seeds?

by L. A. on May 20, 2009

I recently gave my daughter a bag of sesame seeds in hopes she could play with them. I was wondering can a dog have sesame seeds, or is it toxic to them. If so, how do you get it out of them. She also has chocolate chips, nuts and raisins in her bag. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

by the way, I think those of you who do not understand that sesame seeds are food for animals that eat them will be amazed to find that sesame seeds contain over 30% fat, and that dogs actually eat them…

Sesame seeds are not toxic. What is poisonous to dogs is when sesame seeds are made into a snack-like product and the food is left out on a table. Do not leave food out for your dogs to eat and don’t give your dogs sesame seeds that they can consume by themselves. This is also true if you feed your dog sesame seeds in another food.

The best way to get seeds out of your dog is to try to remove them from his or her mouth. If you notice your dog is constantly eating them, try to get them off his or her tongue with your fingers.

Sesame seeds are in all parts of a dog’s anatomy. When an animal eats a food that has a lot of fat in it, the fat gets stored around its digestive system, including in the stomach and small intestines. If you remove a dog’s food from the dish after he or she has eaten, the fat is released from the food and from the animal and is absorbed back into the digestive tract and can be released through the dog’s normal stooling and be eaten by other animals.

I have read a couple of stories of dogs eating sesame seeds, but I have never witnessed it myself, nor have I read of anyone on the internet doing it to their dog. However, if you have a dog that regularly eats sesame seeds or leaves seeds on the ground, the seeds can cause an irritation of the intestinal lining and in the most extreme cases can lead to other digestive system problems, including severe diarrhea. If you notice your dog is constantly eating seeds and leaves them on the ground in your area, try to remove the seeds and leave your dog’s food out of the dish.

Our dog just discovered that if she brings her food to bed, she can get more of it when she wakes up. Now we are wondering how to keep her from eating some of it on the floor when we leave the room, or what if she eats some of it before we come back into the room. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This is a simple solution that a lot of dogs will find appealing. This can keep your dog from eating on the floor. A piece of string, such as a shoelace, cut in the shape of a dog bone will keep your dog from eating from the floor. Place the bone at the edge of your dog’s area, or in another area where she is not allowed to eat. You can leave it in place or remove it when you leave the room, but make sure you take it with you when you return to the room.

What's The Right Dog Food For Our Senior Dog

There are different types of dog food available. In order to find the perfect food for your dog, you will have to do some research and ask lots of questions. The most important thing to remember when selecting dog food is to find a dog food that is nutritionally balanced.

Nutrition is the best method of maintaining a dog's health. Many nutritionists now recommend dog foods that contain natural ingredients like meat and vegetable ingredients.

Read food labels. If a dog food is labeled, "natural," "human grade," or "made for pets" then it is probably nutritionally balanced.

Check the ingredient list. It should not contain items that a dog is unlikely to eat. Look for meat and vegetables. These are the first and most important items in any dog's diet.

There is a lot of scientific evidence that dog's should be fed the right diet. Find out more information at Cornell University Dog Diet Research Centre.

How Much Food Does My Dog Need?

There is no standard rule for how much food a dog needs per day.

Your dog's body weight and age will have a lot to do with how much food she needs.

A large, heavy dog may need slightly more than a small dog, but not by much.

What Ingredients Are In Dog Food

Look at the ingredient list in the package of dog food. What do they mean? It may be helpful to know that the term “natural” generally means that the ingredients are healthy and nutritious.

Dog Food and the Environment

Dog food isn't the only concern when it comes to choosing dog food. You should also consider the environment that your dog's food comes from.

Choosing a dog food that is made in your local area means that you can be sure of what is being produced in the state where you live. This not only helps your pet, but it helps you as well, since the fewer long trips you make in your car, the fewer emissions are produced.

Choose a dog food that is made in a clean and local environment.
